Being gay could get you in jail in 86 countries
The international association of Lesbians, Gays and Transsexuals, which is composed by 670 groups, issued a report which warns about the defense of homophobia by 86 nations where relations between consenting adults of the same sex can cost jail.
Also, the organization warns that in seven of them being gay can cost lives, for example, in Mauritania, Sudan, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates or Iran.
“The punishment for sodomy is death. The judge decides how is the breaker of the law is going to be executed, as dictated by the Iranian code, while in Saudi Arabia stipulates death by stoning if one of the men is married with a woman, and the penalty of one hundred lashes and banishment for a year for singles, “says the report released by the association.
According to the world map of homophobia, in India and Pakistan remains in effect the life sentence for being homosexual. In two dozen countries, including Egypt-one of the busiest tourist destinations in the world, imprisonment up to ten years.
The chairman of the National Federation of Lesbians, Gays, Transsexuals and Bisexuals in Spain, Antonio Poveda, reported that the international arena in human rights is still “very serious”. Under the circumstances, Poveda urged Spain and the European Union to act more decisively in favour of gay rights in the countries where they are punished.
Poveda highlighted changes in favour of gay rights in Latin American countries. “In Colombia and Uruguay there are laws governing unmarried partners, and in Argentina a debate has started over a law on gay marriage,” he said.
