Meet the new Mega Rich and their tiring lifes

If you have a million dollars, don’t feel lonely: there are another 10 million people worldwide who are in the same situation. If that amount adds some zeros, then you belong to the exclusive club of mega-rich, some 1,062 tycoons whose fortune stands at over one billion dollars (U S $ 1,000,000,000).

Who are these new ultra-rich? Businessmen who enriched themselves in a few years and thanks to globalization, emerging markets like China, India, Latin America, or in oil-producing countries. In fact, four of the eight richest people on earth are Indians, and the second global wealth is in the hands of Mexican Carlos Slim. There are also 18 Brazilians and four Chileans in the ranking, according to Fortune magazine.

“This is the realm of success and money,” defines the American economist Robert H. Frank, author of Luxury Fever. Living without distress is very comfortable, starting at home: ask the sheikh Hamad bin Jassem bin Jabor al-Thani, deputy prime minister of Qatar, who paid US $ 230 million for a department of 1,800 m2 with terrace in front of Hyde Park.

“There is no more expensive department in the world,” said the architect Richard Rogers, who is building One Hyde Park. This is a complex for ultra-millionaires including, among other luxuries, walls and armoured glass, a ventilation system that disseminates purified air, a spa in each department, a security team composed solely of former elite corps of commandos and even SAS Panic rooms.

The mega-rich doesn’t save also when decorating their properties, especially with works of art: Russian tycoon Roman Abramovich, owner of London soccer team Chelsea, paid US $ 86.2 million for a triptych by Francis Bacon and others US $ 34 million for a naked woman of Lucian Freud.

To go from one house to another, the ultra-rich can choose among various means of transport. The Saudi prince Al-Walid bin Talal bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud, for example, has two identical copies of each model of Rolls Royce, one for himself and another for his bodyguards. As if that were not enough, a year ago he bought an Airbus A380 U S $ 300 million to replace the previous A340 model. Still, retains his personal Boeing 747, with the interior decorated by Hermès.

If they want to set sail, traditional yachts are not sufficiently relaxeing, the new fashion among the mega rich are submarines, like the Phoenix 1000, 454 square meters (US $ 56 million). And if they do not want to go through the tiring journey between the airport and their mansion by car, they can opt for a helicopter from Eurocopter, which offers models decorated by Hermès for US $ 30 million.
