Tell me what music you hear and I will tell you what wine you drink

Music can influence the taste of wine, according to a British-Chilean research, which reflects what the songs appropriate for each type of drink.

Thus, Jimi Hendrix’s hard rock would be the perfect companion for a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon, while the opera gives special glow to a Syrah 2006.

The research, conducted in collaboration with a Chilean wine producer, says that different types of music stimulate different parts of the brain and prepare us to taste wines in a consistent manner with these melodies.

For example, when you hear a piece of music of great strength, such as Carmina Burana, from Carl Orff, a wine such as Cabernet Sauvignon can be perceived a 60% stronger, rich and robust that when you eat without any music.

“It’s the first time that has been scientifically proven that music can affect the perception of other senses and change the taste of a wine,” said Professor Adrian North from Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh.

The investigation was prompted by the Chilean producer Aurelio Montes, who sings Gregorian chants while making their vines mature because, allegedly, these gentle vibrations improve the quality of wine.

“I was intrigued by Montes approach and I wanted to explore whether music could really influence the taste of our wines,” said North, head of Applied Psychology of the Scottish university. David Williams, editor of the Wine and Spirit magazine, is also excited with the project.

“I like the idea that music can have a tremendous effect on the taste of wine and I also like that people produce wine can use that information,” he said. “Perhaps we can begin to see how promotions change from offering a bottle of wine and a Mozart’s CD for free.

Even one day perhaps I can have casts of music associated with the letter of wine in restaurants with Michelin stars”, he joked. The researchers suggest in their study a list of musical pieces suitable for different types of wine. Thus, in the case Cabernet Sauvignon, the perfect combination would be “All Along the Watchtower” by Jimi Hendrix, “Honky Tonk Woman” by The Rolling Stones, “Live and Let Die” by Paul Macartney and “Will not Get Fooled Again” by the Who .

The Chardonnay is perfect, however, with “Atomic”, from Blondie, “Rock DJ” by Robbie Williams, “What’s Love Got to do With It” by Tina Turner and “Spinning Around” by Kylie Minogue. The Syrah is more classic and is exalted by the aria “Nessun Dorma” from Puccini, sung by the late Luciano Pavarotti.

As for Merlot, their soul mates could be “Sitting On The Dock Of The Bay” by Otis Redding, “Easy” by Lionel Ritchie, “Over The Rainbow” by Eva Cassidy and “Heartbeats” by Jose Gonzalez.
